The Mandalorian’ New Character Posters Show off the Armorer and the Anzellan Droidsmiths — Star Wars…
(Star Wars)……
I needed it to feel like summer so I got in my hot car and sped south past the airport. I took the long way around the warehouses.
They made a new room at the cinema with moving seats, pneumatic guns, wind fans, snow foam, wet mists, scented breezes. It takes a movie and makes it a ride, bending you around and blasting you in the face with feelings. You have to wear 3D glasses, which, combined with all the moving, will make you feel sick and disoriented.
I pulled in after the soda men in their red vans, parked on the curb near the doors like there was an emergency. “Out of the way! That Mello Yello is on its last legs!” they might scream as they sprinted through the lobby, guarding their dolly like a gurney.
Inside, two Coca Cola Mechanics were replenishing the holy syrups, cleaning the nozzles, and conducting a flavor audit, calibrating the drink droids to dispense appropriately carbonated and precisely mixed formulations from its frothing cloaca.
Immediately, I felt a kinship with these polo shirted men, these cardinals, these steadfast guardians of enjoyment. They dote lovingly on the Freestyle Fountains. They are proud fathers of a flock, recording their health and daily output on proprietary tablets with software designed by McKinsey. These gentlemen can tell a Sprite is under-concentrated from ten feet away from the viscosity alone. Gary can tell just from listening.
Soda is essential to the brainrot moviegoing experience. I tap the machine’s screen for a now-discontinued peach variant of Coke Zero. The younger soda man watched me pour and I wondered if he admired my wise and careful fizz control. I think I saw him nod in approval.
People have deep and tortured relationships with the Famous Space Movies, which are mostly bad and have always been. What I like about them is they have freaky aliens and cool planes. I don’t expect anything more because I am also a Democrat and believe in disappointment as a lifestyle.
If you, dear reader, personally care about the Famous Space Movies, I have some hard words: it’s deranged to care too much about anything made by a theme park if you are also tall enough to ride everything.
Thankfully, this particular Famous Space Movie knows it’s not important. It’s a cavalcade of rubbery goblins smashing into each other with some planes at the end. It was made for six year old boys who annoy their mothers.
There were no kids in the Feeling Blaster Room — just adults with fleece blankets who laughed when the unruly moving seats surprised them.
It was so much everything for two hours: bubbles from the ceiling, falling off of cliffs, the smell of oil, weird little guys, rain drops, a big albino watersnake, strobe flashes, and Only One Girl Unless You Count a Slug.
Glued to my peachy slurp in the jerky hydraulic chariot, I slipped into a vortex of pure sensation. Later on I will pull up an explainer on my phone to catch up with what I missed while fetching a bespoke soda refill:
During or after 11 ABY, the youngling Din Grogu stole a fish from Gatori’s hut in the swamps and later returned for another, only to be swallowed by a frog-like creature. The swamp-dweller then saved Grogu with a slingshot and gave the child another fish. Grogu then had to hide when the bounty hunter Embo and his anooba Keibu then arrived at the hut searching for the youngling and his father, Din Djarin, on behalf of the Hutt crime lords known as the Twins.
I barely know what any of those words mean but I do know that Gatori is a reptile man who looks Cajun. I would have called him Boodro.
At some point I lost hold of the slippery plot and poked at my personal air-and-water system to see if it was delivering enough wet and wind during the rainy parts. It only takes an hour to go from “this is too much” to “am I getting everything I am owed?” and management consultants call this the Hedonic Treadmill.
Some people haven’t been to the movies in years and offer me boring excuses about time and the circumstances of their lives.
They wait to watch the Famous Space Movies on their couch so they can wring out all the fun with their outrage machines in their hand. They do not understand why I use my precious daycare-covered time to rush to endure a spectacle I will not enjoy or remember.
And so here I will explain myself.
If I lived in Sicily, I would eat almond granita in the plaza every morning because that is what life in Sicily is about.
But I live in America, which means submitting to the Feeling Blaster Room.
The fruits of our culture are not about leisurely mornings and small talk with your neighbors over hot bitter espresso.
They are about consuming so much stimulation that by the time you stumble out into the hot parking lot you forget who you are or what you even wanted.
